Fax Preference Service (FPS) is a central opt out register whereby businesses (and individuals if they wish) can register their choice not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing faxes. It is a legal requirement that companies do not send such faxes to numbers registered on the FPS.

The original legislation was introduced in May 1999. It has subsequently been updated and the relevant legislation is now the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003. Once a number has been registered it will become effective in 28 days.

Mailing Preference Service (MPS) supports your right to choose the mail you want.

The MPS can remove your name from up to 95% of Direct Mail lists.
With UK consumers generating over £25 billion worth of postal sales per year, it's fair to say the majority welcome the information and special offers they receive by post. However, it's also understandable why some people might take a different view. The MPS is here to make your choice known - so you get the mail you want and need.
Unwanted, unread Direct Mail has no place in anyone's home. And if you're not interested in receiving it, they will update their records for Direct Mail companies to see and adjust their lists as you request.
Many of the people who register their preferences with them have suffered a bereavement, and they simply want to stop future commercial mailings from being sent to the deceased.

The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service set up 20 years ago and funded by the direct mail industry to enable consumers to have their names and home addresses in the UK removed from or added to lists used by the industry. It is actively supported by the Royal Mail and all directly involved trade associations and fully supported by the Office of the Information Commissioner.

Telephone Preference Service (TPS) helps you to make sure your telephone number is no longer available to organisations who may telephone you with offers and information you do not wish to receive.
Under Government legislation introduced on 1 May 1999 it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.

You can stop calls either by contacting companies directly and asking them not to call you or you can register for FREE with a central register - the TPS. Once a number has been registered it will become effective in 28 days.

If you have been troubled by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent Callgard Service on 0870 4443969. These calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the next answered call.
